What is Transfer Press Tooling?

Transfer press tooling, or transfer die stamping, is an automated metal-forming process for efficient and high-speed manufacturing. In transfer press stamping, all forming operations occur in one large press machine, with all the necessary dies integrated into a single die set.

The first operation in transfer die stamping is to separate the part from a sheet or strip of raw metal. The separated component is then physically “transferred” to the next operation using an automated transfer mechanism. Each production part is freely transferred and repositioned through the various forming operations. After the dies are loaded, each stroke of the press machine produces a completed part.

Simultaneous operations and high-speed transfers make this process excellent for high-volume stamping projects. Transfer press tooling can create highly complex metal parts with precision and detail. Large parts can be manufactured with specialized features, making transfer tooling a versatile solution for virtually endless application requirements.

• Progressive Die Tooling: This method incorporates all required tooling into a single die set. Sheet metal is fed through a press and stamped at each operation. The finished part is cut off and ejected after completion. Progressive die tooling is excellent for high-volume production runs.
• Metal-to-Rubber and Metal-to-Metal Tooling: With this style of tooling, sheet metal is pressed between a die and a rubber block. The rubber can be standard flat or machined in a die shape to expand design capabilities. Rubber pad forming is commonly used for low-volume production runs.
